Incase you missed my thread on twitter, in place of a year reflection I wanted to share my top games of 2020 for those who are interested! These aren't necessarily games released this year, just games that I personally have been playing and enjoying!! In no particular order here they are; https://twitter.com/eIder_fIower/status/1344709375131340801?s=19 Hollow Knight By far the absolute winner and game that has made it in my top 5 of all time has to be Hollow Knight. Idk why it took me this long to get to it but oh boy am I glad I did. Never have more of my favourite game elements been featured in one game.. a challenging but tightly designed platformer, beautiful and kinda creepy art style, obscure narrative w lots of environmental story telling, incredible soundtrack, maybe the best atmosphere that completely sucked me in, I could go on and on about this game. I started playing at a pretty lonely crappy point in this year and I couldn't stop, currently stuck at 99% completion and have every intention to lose more of my life to it tryna get that full 112% Ori and the Will of the Wisps Another platformer I know, but a v deserving one, plus it actually came out this year!! If you thought the first one was beautiful this one will knock your socks off, I cried (again), gameplay design is once again so crisp, super juicy, amazing environment and creatures, plenty challenging but not as hard to access as others like hollow knight or Celeste and such a beautifully unique narrative again, I really love these games, play the first one too if you haven't Hades Another recent release woo! If you know me you know I absolutely adore roguelikes and I can't contain my excitement about getting such a phenomenal new one out of nowhere. I'll never get bored of Greek mythology as a theme but this game did it so stylishly wow. Character art alone gave me a sexual awakening, so many cool extras for classics nerds but totally accessable for those who aren't, some cool updates to stories which didn't feel weird or out of place, gameplay wise this did such a cool job of having real substantial narrative and gameplay progressions, each time you return home you can't wait to get back and run and each time you're on a run you just wanna be getting back to the hub and talking to all your friends (and petting Cerberus). One of the least grindy and most accessable roguelikes I've played, if you struggled with binding of Isaac or spelunky this one might be more your speed, and if you like a challenge there are options to make it absolute hell too. This was a top one for me, definitely on my "want to 100%" list. And if you've played bastion before just know this soundtrack absolutely lives up to expectations. The Witcher 3 This is a weird one to include since I did play it on release, but my small ADHD brain forgot to keep playing part way through so I restarted in lockdown 1.0 and finally completed it yay! I've nearly done everything in this game I played for HOURS. Honestly there's a lot I find meh about this game, combat is clunky at times, menus can be a bit overwhelming, I really hate depreciating weapon mechanics in games... but man the depth of this world, the characters, the stories, creature design, Gwent, just such a rich world to get lost in, if you enjoy open world fantasy why haven't you played this game yet. Also if you're looking for a reason to go back the DLC's are solid. Mario Odyssey Mario is the blueprint for taking one mechanic and absolutely perfecting it, and after decades of (mostly) perfect mechanic after perfect mechanic we have Odyssey. I completely no life'd this game up until darker side (500 moons) and have since happily been going back to get more, this game totally tickles the completionist in me, the world's are all unique and interesting, you can become a T-Rex, another simple but effective lil story, accessable to all skill levels up to game completion but PLENTY of challenge both in puzzles and movement, I don't know many people who wouldn't enjoy this game Kentucky Route Zero Idk how to talk about this game effectively so bare with me. I would describe KRZ as a magical realism point and click adventure experience. There's not much gameplay, but that's not why you play it. You simply talk to and learn about people while attempting to make a furniture delivery, it's the most mundane yet mystical atmosphere and I think one of the most impactful games I've ever played. I definitely recommend taking it a chapter at a time and spending some time ruminating on it in-between. Untitled Goose Game Can't fault this game but also not much to say, it's not big or epic but it's a solid out the box funny puzzle game where you play as a goose, give the locals hell and have a honk button (I think this game was made for me). Co-op is also super fun, double the honking power! Play this game for a pick me up, always a guaranteed smile. HONK. Valorant Felt like I had to include this one since it's the only multiplayer game I spent any significant time on this year. I'm not a big fan of riot as a company but this shooter feels clean, art is real nice, player abilities make it more interesting and feel more casual (atleast for me personally). Kinda like if counter strike and overwatch had a baby. Easy to pick up if you have any background in online shooters. I think my real enjoyment just comes from being able to play casually, mic off and chat minimal, I got really burnt out from the regular harassment I faced on CS:GO and this game has filled the void it left with minimal nastiness. Plus I look a bit like viper which is a vibe. Animal Crossing This is a v defining game for a lot of people in 2020, it's been such a source of calm wholesomeness for everyone throughout the year, I was only able to jump on the train recently and now my life is all consumed by turning my island into a beautiful calm witchy forrest, paying back my debts to Tom Nook and giving cute sweaters to my bff Clay. This is my first animal crossing game since Wild World and I'm absolutely obsessed with the focus they've put on customisation and aesthetics. God of War Oh boy am I glad I finally got round to playing GoW this year, this is another one I started and could not stop until I'd done almost everything. The flow of this game is like nothing I've played before, the cut scenes, the conversations between Cratos and his BOY (and later Mímir), hearing about the Norse mythology, great combat, puzzle solving. So smooth and expertly weaved together. More than anything I enjoyed just walking around listening to these two chat while trying to find all the secrets of each area.
