2023-08-20 15:48:54 +0000 UTC View Postthe giver of stars jojo moyes you know in anne with an e (i haven’t seen the show) when she goes “oh how i love being a woman!” i had that voice in my head the whole time while reading this both sincerely and ironically. i’ve been reading too many books with terrible couplings lately it was so refreshing to finally have some good ships. there’s so many cute couples in this one to swoon over. it’s not really a romance tho it’s much more about women’s friendships and the importance of literature and of education in general. she also focuses on class struggles specific to mining towns. depression era historical fiction about eleanor roosevelt’s / the WPA’s packhorse librarians. the best murder weapon ever written. 9/10 would be 10/10 if it was gayer. this is the same author as me before you and i think this one’s even better. and somehow made me cry even more i can not even read the first line of the amy lowell poem this is titled after without bursting into tears
2023-08-17 21:26:34 +0000 UTC View Postthe handmaids tale margaret atwood 50 pages in i knew this was one of the best books i’ve ever read. given our current political climate, especially the overturning of roe vs wade, this is a horrifying read. i got sick to my stomach multiple times. i don’t really want to do a whole ~review~ of this id rather you just read it. should be required reading. 10/10

2023-08-04 21:33:01 +0000 UTC View Postachieving our country richard rorty started out skeptical, because i find being optimistic about america hard, but he won me over. then he lost me again when he started dick sucking capitalism and the cold war. i disagree that the left needs to hold more space for capitalists. i agree with some of his arguments on WHY it would be helpful, but still i disagree overall. if i were to write about everything i disagree with in this we’d have a text longer than the actual book. i do agree that the left needs more nuance and to let go of it’s obsession with moral purity and i think the relevancy of his ideas have stood the test of time so far. 6/10
