In August 1991, after the adoption of the Declaration on State Sovereignty (the first such document on the territory of the former USSR), independence was proclaimed and the institution of legitimate power was established. Having departed from communist totalitarianism, Ukraine has embarked on the path of democracy, market economy and development. The struggle for independence continues to this day, because it does not give rest to the neighbors, who in the past proudly called themselves "brotherly people".
