Here’s my gym newbie hot take:

Majority of “beginner friendly” guides, & workout videos show off very technical movements that require a sense of balance on barbell & dumbbell movements that a lot of new gym ppl do not have yet. It makes no sense to have someone completely unfamiliar with the gym doing crazy exercises when they likely don’t even know “where” they’re supposed to “feel it”. Add extra unnecessary volume into the mix with the templates of 4x12 on each exercise that’s likely just the same mechanical movement as the previous, & these people who never worked out in their life can barely walk up stairs & are sitting on their tooshy for days from how sore they are.
I think it’s important to advise gym beginners to first become acquainted with accessories & basic movements, even maybe staying at body weight or machine work at low volumes so their bodies become familiar with the techniques, & they can adapt to a higher training volume.

I think people also forget that a lot of new gym people can be shy about doing things so making someone do something like a barbell glute bridge when they probably don’t know how to set it up, what their gym environment/culture is like, & how they’re supposed to technically do the movement is asking a lot of ppl. I know personally I didn’t touch a dumbbell for months before I worked the courage to get there.

I just think people need to BFFR about what’s actually gym beginner friendly & what isn’t.
