So here we are. A video of me eating none other than the James Beard award winning Dong Phoung King Cake. If you don’t know what king cake is… well first off it is indeed a cake. It’s eaten between the dates of King’s Day (Jan 6th) and Mardi Gras day. King cake comes in a lot of different shapes and sizes. There’s traditional king cake which has a cinnamon dough topping with icing and colored sugar. Now some people will argue to the death that true traditional king king is a plain down with just sugar sprinkles. But what I just described is what you’re gonna get if you come to New Orleans and you order a “traditional” king cake. Non traditional kingcakes vary immensely. From flavors embedded into the cake itself and the icing. Heck- some of the Nontraditional ones aren’t even cake. I’ve seen ice cream king cakes, sushi king cakes, really just about anything someone can put it to the oval shape associated with kingcake. Anyway, there’s a whole “Big Book of King Cake” (yes I have a copy) of you really want the ins and outs of King Cake business, but I hope you enjoyed my little microblog. 💋
