I have been an ER nurse for 6 years. I worked a ton all through the pandemic, and it was hell, but I loved my job. Last year I also worked as a travel ER nurse and a nursing clinical instructor, and I was in grad school to become a Nurse Practitioner. In January ‘23 I went to the ER because I was having severe left hip and back pain that went down my legs, that wasn’t getting better. I thought I had dislocated or broken my hip, or herniated a disk in my back. I was admitted to the hospital when they found arachnoiditis in my spinal cord, and a lesion from T10-12 causing expansion on my spine. After 5 days in the hospital, 6 MRIs, labs, and an excruciating lumbar puncture that was the worst pain of my life.. they still didn’t know what this lesion was. After the top hospital in my state couldn’t provide any answers, after more painful procedures, and my condition not improving, we decided to seek the help of the top hospital in the U.S., the Mayo Clinic. We have been having to make trips to Mayo for more testing and appointments with specialists over the last couple of months. After more tests and procedures, it is the opinion of the neurosurgeon at Mayo that what I have is arachnoiditis of the spine, with an arachnoid web that has created a band around T10-12 of my spinal cord. The only treatment is spinal surgery, to cut the arachnoid web and spinal tether free. Surgery is not recommended, as surgery can paralyze me, make the arachnoiditis in the spine worse, and there is no guarantee that the surgery would help. The only treatment then is pain control, and I have also been in PT. I am told that it will just get worse over time, and I will end up wheelchair bound. I was told that they also found some abnormalities in my pelvis that causes severe pain. I am hoping to have a hysterectomy soon, in hopes for a better quality of life. This news has been devastating, as I was hoping for a better outcome or treatment plan. This past week after our last trip to Mayo has been especially difficult, and I have been struggling mentally as well as physically. I also have 12 years in recovery, so being diagnosed with a chronic, debilitating pain condition is heartbreaking to me as well. Being an ER nurse was my passion and purpose in life, and being unable to work has been a huge strain on our family of 6. We just bought our dream home and property in October ‘22, and I was the breadwinner in our family. Any content you buy will help us pay our bills, and raise our 4.
